StoryLine 2 as a stand-alone product is still available and Articulate claims that StoryLine 3 will be available sometime in 2017. 2016, Articulate released 360 which bundled all of their current programs into one annual subscription (which is way too expensive for us to even consider). These include such things as a) inability to use with high-res monitors b) no capability to e-mail results to admin or user c) no feature to have background audio across all slides (see Chris' review) d) no capability to publish only HTML5 output e) poor quality of HTML5 published output that does NOT work well on many mobile devices f) no responsive design capability g) no capability to send results to a database h) very slow player response on timeline when synchronizing animations and no true scrubber and several other issues. Recently, it is becoming apparent that StoryLine has some major shortcomings, and that Articulate has been slow in adding new features and enhancements in response to client requests. "Sorry, we don't provide support for javascript perhaps someone in the community can help you out." Fortunately for me, there was always someone well versed with javascript that was willing to share their code. But the stock answer when you have a javascript question is. For example, StoryLine has the capability to execute javascript which greatly expands what you can do with it. However, I can relate to Chris' frustration. Articulate has the best community and I was usually able to get the help I needed from moderators or other community members. But I never really had to submit a support ticket. It became one of my favorite software development tools allowing me to do things I never dreamed possible and really impressed (and expanded) my clients.

They are relatively equal, but a beginner would likely have an easier time with Storyline, or, if you love to use your creative juices and the idea of a blank slate and creative license appeals to you, Captivate may be best.I have been an Articulate StoryLine user since it came out in about 2013. there are many more resources (templates, people willing to share designs etc) for Storyline. One things i will say, is if you are working with a team who are design beginners. Having Rise is nice, but there are many limitations to its use and there are limited options for interactivity. I enjoy it as well, but find its really easy to revert back to PPT slide styles. so maybe thats why i found it a more robust program? We also used it with the entire creative suites. I prefer Storyline 360 because of the review feature, and if you’re looking to deploy fast courses, Rise is amazing and has a super low entry point into a course authoring software. I really enjoyed using captivate when i was using it for work. Captivate is not by any means the worst program out there, but it is definitely not up to the Adobe standard (and it looks dated in comparison to Adobe’s products). but once you get the hang of it, i find the options are endless for design and interactivity. Captivate can be overwhelming to someone who is just starting to use it. If links are abused (excessive/obvious promotion), then they will be disabled. Currently both self posts and links are allowed.

Given that Adobe upgrades Captivate approximately once each year, and you get the upgrades for free as part of your subscription, subscribing is a pretty good deal.
